Competitive Tui Shou Rules

Arena: A circular competition area, 3 meters in diameter.

Core Rules

A competitive sport where athletes utilize contact points to attack and defend. The objective is to maintain your own balance while forcing your opponent to lose balance and step outside the ring.

Throughout the match, the following techniques are strictly prohibited:

  • No Striking or Shoving: Athletes cannot use any striking techniques, including punches, kicks, or sudden shoving. Before exerting force or power (fa jin), continuous contact must be established between the opponent's neck and pelvis.
  • No Throws or Takedowns: Techniques such as throws, sweeps, and clinches—including Judo or wrestling-style takedowns—are entirely forbidden.
  • No Joint Locks or Grabbing: Athletes are not allowed to grip, grab, or pull the opponent in any manner, nor apply joint-locking techniques. Gripping the opponent's hands or pulling their clothing is strictly prohibited.

Scoring and Penalties

Scoring

  • 1 Point: Awarded when an athlete successfully forces their opponent to step outside the ring first, or causes them to touch the ground inside the ring with any part of the body other than the soles of their feet.

Penalties

  • All referee decisions and penalties during the match are final; no appeals process is provid

Fouls

Foul Tendency: The referee will issue a verbal warning to the athlete without pausing the match.

Minor Fouls

If an athlete uses any prohibited technique to obstruct an opponent's movement, the referee will pause the match and issue a Yellow Card. Accumulating two yellow cards results in an immediate 1-point deduction.

Major Fouls

If an athlete uses any prohibited technique to prevent an opponent from scoring, the referee will pause the match and issue a Red Card, resulting in an immediate 1-point deduction.

Flagrant Fouls

If an athlete repeatedly commits fouls or intentionally causes bodily harm to an opponent, the referee will terminate the match and disqualify the offender. The opponent will immediately be declared the winner.
